Incident Overview
A 31-year-old landlord in Delhi has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his tenant, resulting in the tenant's death. The landlord suspected the tenant of attempting to hack his phone and steal rare coins from his collection.
Details of the Assault
The incident came to light on November 9, when the tenant, identified as Tamanney, arrived at the Subhash Place police station with two acquaintances, alleging that his landlord had beaten him. Shortly after making the complaint, Tamanney lost consciousness and was transported to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Investigation Findings
Investigations revealed that Tamanney worked at a factory on Lawrence Road and resided in Shakurpur. A co-worker reported that Tamanney and his roommate, Virender, had been confined and assaulted by their landlord, Irshad, over suspicions of phone hacking and theft of rare coins. The assaults reportedly took place over two days, involving physical beatings with fists, kicks, and a belt.
Escape and Medical Attention
The victims managed to escape on the morning of November 7 and sought refuge at a friend's residence. Tamanney sought medical treatment at multiple clinics over the next two days due to abdominal pain. An ultrasound later revealed significant internal bleeding, prompting them to report the matter to the police station, where Tamanney collapsed and subsequently died.
Arrest and Confession
Following the incident, Virender fled to his native village in Bihar out of fear. Police conducted raids across Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Etah, Kasganj, and Aligarh, to apprehend the accused. Acting on a tip-off, authorities arrested Irshad from Rohini on November 11. During interrogation, Irshad confessed to assaulting both victims, claiming he suspected them of trying to hack his phone to erase evidence related to a robbery at his Wazirpur factory. He also accused them of stealing rare coins from his collection.
Legal Proceedings
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities recovered a belt used in the assault, a rope used for tying the victims, a Termin injection vial, and the deceased's mobile phone at the instance of the accused. Further investigation is underway.
